As Sonny Kanchin crossed the start/finish line for the penultimate time at the Silverstone Southern Circuit in England, it seemed as if he had another win in the bag. However he ran wide going onto the back straight, Nomm got through, but Jason Cooper was right behind the championship leader. Then in the final corner Jason Cooper went around the outside of Kanchin because he ran out of fuel, after his risky pitstop that was two seconds quicker than everyone else.
Kanchin was beaten, by not one, but two cars. Something that we haven’t seen much of at all in the last two seasons of the Heusinkveld Mazda MX-5 World Tour.
Nomm would win for the second time this season, getting closer to Kanchin. the gap behind the two leaders was over 200 points going into the Silverstone round, with two races left to run. Steven Van Opstal, the leading AM driver, sits in third place overall, with a 150 point lead over the next AM driver, Adam McNally in 8th place overall.
Van Opstal would win in his class, almost sealing his AM championship win with two rounds left.
Cooper got pole position ahead of Eerõ Nomm and Sonny Kanchin in third.
After leading the first stint in the race Jason Cooper said, “I could tell they were saving fuel. I was surprised how close it was when I came out of the pits, I thought they were going to be far ahead.”
Kanchin said, “It was disappointing, I ran out of fuel. I took a little less than I usually would,” he went on to say, “I didn’t calculate the fuel like I normally do.” Proving how little things make a big difference, and even the smallest of things can ruin your chances of winning.
Gene Fiddes was the first to come into the pits on lap 13 from seventh place. Fiddes was in front of Tom Rathje when he came out of the pits on lap 18, but he made a mistake that gave him a slow down, so he lost the position, undoing all the hard work.
Second place driver, Eerõ Nomm came into the pits a lap later, Sonny Kanchin and Jason Cooper came in at the next opportunity. Kanchin and Cooper came out in front of Nomm, but Kanchin had gained the time on Cooper after a quick stop. Nomm made it past the two after Vale on the same lap, putting him in a net lead once the rest of the field finish their stops.
The three leaders kept on lapping until the end with regular position changes, until Nomm would cross the line for the 36th time to end round eleven of the MX-5 World Tour.
The next, and penultimate round of the Heusinkvled Mazda MX-5 World Tour will be at Interlagos in Brazil. A track that created some great racing in the final round from last season, once again we will expect some great clean racing from the top three drivers.
