The tenth round of the MWT will be at Road America for an 18 lap race. With just three rounds left in the 13 round season drivers will be driving conservatively to reduce the risk of crashing, but they will also need to be more aggressive to make moves that could lead to vital championship points.
Sonny Kanchin was the first to set a time in qualifying, but seconds later Eerõ Nomm beat it with a time of 2:33.410. The AM driver Jason Cooper did a 2:33.04, to put him in a provisional second place. Kanchin was on his way round for his final lap, when he crossed the line he set a 2:33.340, which would put him on pole position because Eerõ Nomm would not be able to improve his lap time. Jason Cooper was not able to improve on his second lap as well, meaning he would have to settle for 4th place, behind the Asbury Motorsport driver Marcello Pagnan.
The lights went out once all of the drivers were on the gird. The front four stayed the same, but Gianni Quintelier was able to pass Tom Rathje from 6th place on the grid to move up to P5.
At the end of the first lap Nomm made the move for the lead on Kanchin. Kanchin let him go by to play the strategy game. Then Kanchin took the lead back from Nomm at the end of lap two. Possibly in an attempt to try and build a gap between him and the six car train that was following him. Next time by the leaders changed places again, but Kanchin got back past on the straight leading into turn three.
On lap four Stefan Overgaard got loose on the exit of the Kink after running a bit wide. He hit the inside wall hard, ending his race with 14 laps left.
Tom Rathje and Kip Stephens crashed on lap 5 going into turn three. Stephens turned into the side of the Asbury Motorsport car ever so slightly and they both spun into the outside barrier. Both drivers retired with major damage.
Nomm was passed by Pagnan on the lap before the pit stop window, which opened on lap seven.
Nomm and Cooper came in to pit on lap eight, both drivers hit their boxes perfectly. The front four stayed out, with some bump drafting for Kanchin from his Italian teammate Pagnan. All of the front four came in to pit with nine laps to go. Gianni Quintelier came out of the pits in the lead, followed by Kanchin and Nomm, who was not able to jump his rival.
Quintelier was quickly passed by Kanchin at turn three on the same lap. Nomm passed Quintelier towards the end of the lap. But disaster, Quintelier had to come back into the pits to serve an unsafe pit exit penalty because he tried to avoid contact with Kanchin. He would retire the car because he didn’t see much point in continuing.
Jordie Fike was able to jump Steven Van Opstal in the pits stops after a move around the outside of turn one.
Jason Cooper spun at turn three from third place. He was forced to take a tow and end his race after hard contact with the wall.
Nomm made the move for the lead on Kanchin after the Kink with seven laps to go, but Kanchin got back past on the main straight.
Pagnan was pressuring Nomm until he was able to pass him around the outside going into turn three. Nomm got back passed Pagnan at turn one with three to go. Pagnan sold Nomm a dummy going into turn three, but Nomm turned in on Pagnan, sending Nomm into a half spin, but with some major left rear suspension damage. Nomm spun a few corners later because of the damage.
Whilst all of this was going on Kanchin was able to pull away and drive to consolidate his win. Nomm would retire the car at the end of the lap.
The white flag flew and Jordie Fike made the move for fourth place at the popular overtaking spot of turn three.
Sonny Kanchin came round the final corner to win round ten and get some more fingers on the championship. Adam Mcnally would get his first podium in the MWT after a third place finish behind Marcello Pagnan.
The 11th round of the Heusinkveld Mazda MX-5 World Tour will be held at Silverstone in the UK on the 30th of June. Eerõ Nomm will be looking to re-gain some of the points he lost in round ten and Kanchin will want to get closer to the title.
