The third round of the Heusinkveld Mazda MX-5 World Tour was at Summit Point Motorsports Park, just outside of West Virginia in the USA, however the drivers would be driving all around the world sitting in-front of a computer screen.
The grid was without Sonny Kanchin for the first time in a long time, this gave Eero Nomm the chance to steal a win from him, Nomm qualified on pole with Artem Khorolsky along side him. Marcello Pagnan, someone who would play a key role at the end of the race, started all the way back in 8th.
The first lap was clean with no contact, at the end of lap two Khorolsky made the move for the lead going into turn one. Khorolsky built a gap to Nomm and Fides in second and third. The first pitstop came from Tom Rathje on lap 14, getting out cleanly to continue on with his race. On lap 16 Gene Fides came into take his pitstop from third place, however he overshot his pit stall loosing a couple critical seconds.
Four laps later Khorolsky and Nomm came in for their pitstops to see if they were able to jump Gene Fides, Khorolsky was the first out which was surprising considering he was at the front of the pack and not able to save fuel, he was followed by Nomm and then Pagnan who was now in a net fourth behind Richard Worth after they jumped Fides in the pits.
With three laps to go the leader Khorolsky had a heart break moment when he started to have internet problems which sent him into the pits, then out of the race. This left Pagnan, Worth, Nomm and Fides to battle for the win. On the last lap Pagnan went around the outside of Nomm into turn one, he was able to carry the momentum through and keep the inside for turn two, Pagnan was able to make the move stick. Nomm was not able to make a solid move before the finish leaving Pagnan to win.
Marcello Pagnan got his first win of the season and of his carrer in the MWT, can he carry this momentum over to the next round at VIR? Can Artem Khorolsky get some luck and fight Sonny Kanchin for the win? Who nows, you will have to tune into the broadcast on the 7th of April by the Global Sim-Racing Channel on Youtube.
